However listening to the experiences and lessons shared during these conversations – resolutely redirects a heightened sense of purposefulness. It could either contribute to your journey, or provide you with an awareness to re-calibrate, and change your current trajectory.

Moeletji Mapheto – Trainee at Mercedes-Benz South Africa
In 2015 the global community adopted the United Nation’s (UN) 17 global goals for sustainable development to improve people’s lives by 2030. Moeletji Mapheto (27), a trainee Chartered Accountant [CA(SA)], took a personal commitment three years ago to address three of the 17 goals (namely no poverty, zero hunger and quality education) in her home village of Ga-Mphahlele in Limpopo. She was also inspired by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (SAICA) “profession of national value” strategic pillar. Moeletji’s commitment to making a difference started in 2011 during her first year of university when she discovered that a lot of her peers who she went to school with in her village did not make it to university and some did not even know anything about university. It was then that she decided to become a career guidance volunteer at Phauwe Secondary School.
Chantal Potgieter – Audit Manager at Diastoleus Professio Incorporated
As a recently qualified AGA (SA) she enjoy guiding students and trainees on how to embrace their training contract journey and make the most of their learning experience. She is a regular contributor to SAICA’s Accountancy SA online articles, the focus of her articles are on students and trainees, in order to provide them with a platform of reference for what they can expect and how they can use opportunities to the best of their ability. She use platforms available to her such as her firm (where I am the audit manager) as well as social media platforms to engage with trainees, and provide them with accurate and relevant information.
Hiresha Naidoo –Academic Trainee at University of Johannesburg
Hiresha graduated from UJ in 2018 with a Bachelors in Accounting Science. She continued to complete my honours degree the following year and successfully completed the ITC at the beginning of 2020. She is currently doing her academic articles at the University of Johannesburg in the Finance CTA module. She intends on completing her Masters in Finance and hopefully a degree in Information Technology.
Taylor Joseph – Trainee Auditor-General
Taylor is an astute, forward-thinking professional, pursuing a career in audit, assurance and financial reporting. She holds both Bachelor of Accounting and Honors degrees from the University of Stellenbosch and has since successfully completed both her ITC and APC exams. Being well on her way to becoming a Chartered Accountant, Taylor has redirected her energies to developing the skills of those around her at the Western Cape office of the Auditor General and is currently mentoring trainees in preparation of their APC exams.
Beyond her career ambitions, Taylor uses her spare time to empower women and youth in her community, particularly those who have survived situations of domestic violence. Taylor has most recently embarked on an adventure with the well-known NGO, Philisa Abafazi Bethu, which aims to advocate and provide safe spaces for women and children alike.
Taylor’s mentees have described her as being a highly accomplished individual who refuses to let her successes go unshared. She is adamant about providing her successors with the necessary resources to ensure their every advance.
She is most exemplified by the following quote from her personal heroine, Maya Angelou, “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver”. Taylor demonstrates her desire to live by these words every day.
Lyle Malander CA(SA) – Co-founding director of the Malander Group
A qualified Chartered Accountant who completed his articles at a big 4 audit firm in 2012 and is a co-founding director of the Malander Group. He is also currently the co-chair of the South African FinBiz2030 committee, an initiative pioneered by Chartered Accountants Worldwide and One Young World, aimed at mobilising the finance and business community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In October 2015, he left corporate employment to form the Malander Group, a Group of which he currently serves as Executive Director. The Group consists of the following entities:
- Malander Advisory, a Chartered Accounting and Financial Advisory firms who work with many large and listed entities within South Africa;
- Malander Placements, a recruitment firm with a core focus on finance recruitment, as well as IT and Legal recruitment;
- M-inent Solutions, a SMME focused accounting, recruitment and Digital marketing firm.
Lyle has been instrumental in the establishment and growth of the Malander Group, which has also expanded into the United Kingdom.
In 2018 Lyle was named the winner of the SAICA Top 35 under 35 competition and in 2019, he was named the Young Professional of the Year in the South African Professional Services awards.
