Gert is a specialist in the field of trusts, estate planning and administration of deceased estates. He spent a number of years in the office of the Master of the High Court: Bloemfontein while studying part-time for his Bachelors Degree in Law. After that he spent four years as manager of the trust department of a bank. He was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of South Africa in 1985. From 1978 to 2000, Gert van den Berg has been in private practice, specialising in trusts, estate planning and administration of estates. In December 2000 he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as an Associate Director, heading their trust and estate department in Pretoria. Since the 1st of July 2015 he practiced under the name of Delport van den Berg – Estate and Trust Services (Pty) Ltd. He is co-author, together with his previous partner, the late Dr PA Olivier, of the book titled Praktiese Boedelbeplanning as well as co-author with Dr S Strydom of an updated version of the book Trust Law and Practice.

He also co-authored with Dr S Strydom a publication Principles of the Law of Trusts through the Cases summarising the most important court decisions regarding Trust Law. He has lectured on trusts, estate planning and administration of estates at various universities and presents seminars on these topics, throughout South Africa, to clients and institutions including the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, Financial Planning Institute, the fiduciary departments of various banks and the Fiduciary Institute of South Africa. He is a member of the Fiduciary Institute of South Africa (FISA) and the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners (SAIT).
